What are Google AI Overviews?
AI Overviews is the AI-generated summary shown at the top of Google’s results page. In Google’s own words, it helps people "get to the gist of a complicated topic or question more quickly" and acts as a jumping-off point to explore links. It synthesizes several sources and shows a set of links alongside the generated text.
Who controls access to AI Overviews
This is the most expensive confusion in the market. Google-Extended does not govern AI Overviews: Google’s documentation states plainly that robots.txt directives for Googlebot are the site owner’s control over how a site is crawled for Search, and the AI surfaces inside Search are fed by that same crawling.
In practice: blocking Googlebot removes the brand from AI Overviews and AI Mode along with classic search. Google-Extended covers training and grounding in other Google systems, outside Search. To limit what appears inside the AI surfaces without leaving the index, the route is the snippet controls: nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet.
What gets a source into AI Overviews
The same things that win retrieval anywhere else: being indexed and readable without JavaScript, answering the sub-question in a self-contained way, carrying figures with a source and a date, and showing verifiable trust signals such as named authorship.
Google describes both AI Overviews and AI Mode as surfacing "a wider and more diverse set of helpful links" thanks to query fan-out. In other words: there are more doors in than in a list of ten blue links, but each door is a specific sub-question, not the whole topic.

Frequently asked questions
Does blocking Google-Extended remove my brand from AI Overviews?
No. Google-Extended covers training and grounding in other Google systems. What governs crawling for Search, and therefore for the AI surfaces inside it, is Googlebot.
Can you appear in AI Overviews without ranking well in search?
It happens, because the set of links shown is not the classic search ranking: fan-out generates sub-searches and pulls sources that answer each one well, even if they do not lead the broad topic.
How do I know whether my brand appears in AI Overviews?
By testing the target questions directly, in an anonymous session, with the date on record, and comparing against the baseline. It is one of the coverage-by-engine measurements in the monthly report.
