What is Google AI Mode?

AI Mode is Google’s search experience for complex questions, with more advanced reasoning and multimodal capability. In Google’s description it "expands what AI Overviews can do", supports multi-part questions and follow-ups, and is particularly helpful where a query needs further exploration, reasoning or complex comparisons.

How AI Mode works under the hood

Through query fan-out. In Google’s words, it "issues multiple related searches concurrently across subtopics and multiple data sources and then brings those results together to provide an easy-to-understand response". One question becomes a search plan with several parallel sub-searches.

For anyone producing content the consequence is direct: the unit that competes is the block that answers one of the sub-searches, rather than the site or the page. A well-structured page enters several of those contests at once; a diffuse page enters none of them clearly.

Are AI Mode and AI Overviews the same thing?

No. AI Overviews is a summary at the top of the conventional results page; AI Mode is its own conversational experience, built for queries that need more exploration. The two surfaces share the same fan-out mechanics and, per Google, both show a wider and more diverse set of links than traditional search.

What holds for both: access is governed by Googlebot, not Google-Extended. And publishing the right robots.txt is not enough, if the CDN or WAF returns 403 to the user agent, the content is never read, and that is the most common cause of silent invisibility.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to optimize separately for AI Mode?

No. The base is the same as for any AI surface: readable static HTML, self-contained blocks per sub-question, figures with sources and verifiable authorship. What changes is measurement, which is done engine by engine.

Does AI Mode send traffic to the site?

It does, through the links it shows, but in lower volume than classic search for the same query, because part of the answer is consumed on the surface itself. That is why citation is the primary metric and AI traffic is a supporting one.

How do you measure presence in AI Mode?

By running the target-question set on that surface specifically, in an anonymous session, with the date on record, and comparing against the baseline, exactly as it is measured on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude.
