How do you get your company to appear in ChatGPT and other AI assistants?

To appear in ChatGPT, a company needs three things, in this order: let the AI search crawlers read the site, publish HTML pages that answer the client's questions with data and sources, and have outside signals that confirm who it is. Nobody controls what a model answers; you can control those variables and measure the effect every month. This guide covers the seven steps, what each AI documents about its own crawlers, and how to measure.

Why isn't traditional SEO enough to appear in ChatGPT?

Because a ChatGPT answer cites a few sources, not a list of ten links. SEO is still the base: the page has to be reachable and indexed. What changes is the final choice, which favors passages that answer the question on their own, with verifiable facts and clear authorship.

When a question needs current information, ChatGPT rewrites the request as searches, reads the candidate pages and writes the answer citing some of them. The full path, stage by stage, is in how ChatGPT chooses the sources it cites. The comparison between the two disciplines is in GEO vs SEO.

How do you know whether your company already appears in ChatGPT?

Ask ChatGPT the questions your client would ask, without the company name, in a private window. Repeat the same questions in Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Copilot, and note who appears and which sources each answer shows.

The full protocol, with four question types, five engines and seven logging fields, is in how to test, in 20 minutes, whether AI assistants cite your company. That first snapshot becomes the reference for measuring every step below.

What are the steps for a company to appear in ChatGPT?

There are seven steps. The first four prepare the ground: allow the AI search crawlers, keep text readable without JavaScript and outside PDFs, register the site with Bing and Google and write one page per question. The next three support the choice: sign and date with sources, build signals outside the site and measure every month.

Order matters, because each step depends on the one before. An excellent page with the crawler blocked is never read; a page that is read but gives no direct answer is rarely chosen.

Step 1 · Allow the AI search crawlers

Each AI uses its own crawler to decide whether a site can appear in answers that use search. Blocking it in robots.txt, or letting the CDN return a 403 error to it, takes the company out of the running before any other factor. The AI crawler entry explains how to test access by crawler.

ChatGPTOAI-SearchBotSites that block OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers; a robots.txt change takes about 24 hours to apply
ClaudeClaude-SearchBotBlocking it prevents indexing for search and may reduce the site's visibility in answers

GPTBot, which many sites block, is a different crawler: according to OpenAI, it collects content to train models. Blocking GPTBot and allowing OAI-SearchBot keeps the site eligible for ChatGPT search.

Step 2 · Keep text readable without JavaScript and outside PDFs

The crawler downloads the page HTML and reads what is there. Text that only appears after a script runs, or that sits inside a PDF or an image, arrives incomplete or not at all. The test needs no tool: open the page, use "view source" and look for the main sentence. The details are in why AI can't read PDFs.

Step 3 · Register the site with Bing and Google

According to the OpenAI help center, ChatGPT search works with third-party search providers, Microsoft among them. Copilot also relies on Bing. Registering the domain in Bing Webmaster Tools, submitting the sitemap and announcing new pages through IndexNow is free and takes minutes. In Google Search Console, the same registration opens the performance report for generative AI features.

Step 4 · Write one page per question, with the answer in the first paragraph

Clients ask in full sentences. The winning page answers the question right below a question-form heading, in a passage that makes sense on its own, the anchor answer. Data goes in an HTML table with a source, not in a chart image. Content that sits today in a monthly report or study can become several thematic pages, as the AI-friendly monthly report guide shows.

Google says its search does not require writing in a special way for AI or breaking content into small pieces; its recommendation is original content that is useful to readers. A direct answer meets that standard and makes the passage easier to extract in any engine.

Step 5 · Sign, date and source every number

A named author with a title and a profile page, visible publication and update dates, and a named source next to each number make the page verifiable. In the 2023 academic research that named GEO, citing sources, adding statistics and including attributed quotes raised page visibility in answers by 30% to 40%, in a test environment with 10,000 queries.

Step 6 · Build signals outside the site

AI checks who the company is in other sources: official profiles, press, industry publications and third-party pages. Name, partners, services and address need to match across all of them, because contradictory facts become wrong answers. Every social post should point back to the site page that answers the topic. Google classifies the pursuit of artificial mentions as unhelpful.

Step 7 · Measure every month, with the same questions

The same round of questions, on the same engines, compared with the first test, shows the citation rate and who appears in the company's place. Bing Webmaster Tools shows Copilot citations, and Google Search Console shows performance in generative AI features. ReBo's protocol is in how AI Visibility is measured, and what market tools measure is in the guide to monitoring tools.

How long does it take for a company to appear in ChatGPT?

There is no guaranteed timeline. OpenAI says a robots.txt change takes about 24 hours to apply to ChatGPT search, but a new page still has to be crawled and indexed, and a citation depends on winning the selection for each question.

At ReBo, the working target is to take a company from Level 1 to Level 3 of the AI Visibility framework in 90 days, with the technical foundation in place and the archive opened up. Progress is measured on the same ruler every month, because AI citations vary from one round to the next.

When is it worth hiring a GEO agency?

When the test comes back with zero citations and the cause isn't obvious, or when the company has no team to keep up the publishing and measurement cadence. The steps above are public; the difference lies in running all of them, in order, and proving the effect with data.

ReBo is a GEO and AEO agency and runs these steps in six delivery workstreams, from diagnostic to continuous monitoring. To assess any vendor, ReBo included, use the questions in how to choose a GEO agency.

Frequently asked questions

Does blocking GPTBot take a company out of ChatGPT?

Not out of search. According to OpenAI, GPTBot collects content to train models, and OAI-SearchBot decides whether a site appears in answers that use search. A site that wants to stay out of training and inside search blocks the first and allows the second.

Do I need llms.txt to appear in ChatGPT?

There is no public confirmation that ChatGPT uses llms.txt to choose sources. Google says its search does not need this kind of file. ReBo keeps llms.txt as a site map for agents, without treating it as a citation lever.

Does structured data make a company appear in ChatGPT?

Not on its own. Google says no special markup is required for the AI features in its search. Markup helps declare author, date and page type without ambiguity, but what decides the citation is whether the visible text answers the question.

Can a small company appear in ChatGPT?

It can. Selection looks at the page that answers the question, and a readable, direct, sourced page competes with that of a larger company that publishes everything as PDF. Outside signals and consistent facts matter for everyone.
