What is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)?
AEO, or Answer Engine Optimization, is the practice of optimizing content for answer engines: systems that return a synthesized answer instead of a list of links. The goal is not a ranking position: it is being one of the three to five sources cited inside the answer the user actually reads. It is the dominant term in the English-speaking market for what is also called GEO.
What changes compared with SEO?
In classic SEO the output is a list: ten blue links, and the click is the currency. A brand competes for position, and fifth place still exists. In AEO the engine returns a paragraph with a handful of citations; a source that is not cited simply does not appear, and there is no fifth place to occupy. The competition stops being for space on the page and becomes presence inside the generated text.
The practical consequence is that the signals change weight. Factual density, semantic structure, a self-contained answer per question and verifiable authorship matter more than backlink volume or keyword density. A page that answers twelve specific questions well tends to be retrieved more often than a long page that answers one broad question vaguely.
How do you actually do AEO?
First, by mapping the real natural-language questions, the target prompts, that the audience asks the assistant. Then by publishing pages that answer each of them in a self-contained way: a question as the heading, a complete answer in the first paragraph, figures with a declared source, and structured data that removes ambiguity for the machine.
Finally, by measuring. AEO without measurement is opinion: you have to record which answers name the brand, which do not, and who shows up in its place, against a frozen baseline. Without that record there is no way to know whether the work moved anything.

Frequently asked questions
Are AEO and GEO the same thing?
In practice, yes: both describe optimizing content to be cited inside AI-generated answers. AEO emphasizes the answer engine; GEO emphasizes the generative engine. Choosing between them today is a matter of market vocabulary, not of method.
Does AEO replace SEO?
It does not replace it, and it depends on it. Many assistants retrieve sources from conventional search indexes, so being indexed remains a prerequisite. What changes is the definition of winning: being cited, not being clicked.
How do you measure AEO results?
By citation rate across a fixed set of target questions, share of voice against the competitors cited in the same answers, coverage by engine, and the accuracy of what the model claims about the brand, always against a baseline recorded before publishing.
